The One Thing

Boston Dynamics · Atlas — now 100% Hyundai-ownedThe week Big Industry stopped dabbling in robots
Look past the individual headlines and one thread runs through them all: the incumbents just went all-in. Hyundai bought out SoftBank's last stake in Boston Dynamics to take 100% control (~$335M). Samsung stood up a dedicated robotics division — and hired away the very strategist who ran Boston Dynamics for Hyundai. J&J won FDA clearance for a surgical robot aimed at Intuitive's two-decade monopoly. And roughly $2.5B in fresh capital poured into robot makers in seven days.
The tell isn't the dollar count — it's where the money pointed: not sci-fi androids, but robots with a delivery date. Europe's new unicorn Humanoid ($152M) already holds a 1,000-unit Schaeffler order; Toyota-backed Walden left stealth with a robot already on a Toyota line; Agility booked $300M+ in Digit orders. The demo era is closing. This was the week the deployment era got capitalized.

~$2.5B this week
$152M · new unicornHumanoid (UK) becomes Europe's newest robot unicorn
The maker of the wheeled HMND 01 raised a $152M Series A (with Schaeffler, Bosch and LVMH-backed Aglaé), and already holds a 1,000-robot order from Schaeffler plus Bosch capacity for 100,000 units.
Kalanick's Atoms raises $1.7B, led by Andreessen Horowitz
a16z led a $1.7B round into Atoms, Kalanick's robotics holding company (which owns Levandowski's Pronto); Ben Horowitz joins the board.
China's LimX Dynamics raises ~$200M ahead of an IPO
The general-purpose humanoid maker raised nearly $200M (Redstone VC, Lens Technology) at ~$2.2B — about $400M raised in six months.
TerraFirma raises $115M to roboticize heavy construction
The Austin startup — ex-SpaceX founders — retrofits excavators, dozers and loaders for remote / semi-autonomous operation.
Gritt exits stealth to build solar farms with robots
Obvious Ventures led $26M into Gritt, whose robotic attachments install utility-scale solar — a claimed 3,000–4,000 panels/day per crew, vs ~800 by hand.

WAIC 2026 anchored the week
#9 of 271 humanoidsEngineAI opens the first humanoid combat league — with its T800
In Shenzhen, EngineAI launched "Ultimate Robot Knockout Legend": teams pilot standardized T800 humanoids (173 cm, 29 joints, 450 N·m peak torque, a 360° aerial kick) for a ~$1.44M pool — robots keep fighting after losing their heads.
AgiBot unveils the A3 Ultra — a factory-grade full-size humanoid
Leading four WAIC debuts: 1.74 m, 60 kg, 51 degrees of freedom, 5 kg payload per arm, up to 8 h runtime on Nvidia's Thor chip, with fused GPS/RTK/UWB positioning.
Toyota-backed Walden Robotics steps out of stealth at $1.1B
The Toyota Research Institute spin-out revealed its W0.5 — a wheeled base with a humanoid upper body — already running production logistics at a Toyota plant since February, on a $300M seed.

Kraken Robotics books $35M in underwater-sensing orders
Sonar, navigation and seabed-monitoring systems bound for AUVs, ROVs and uncrewed surface vessels — pushing Kraken's 2026 order total to $327M.
AITX's RAD lands a $1.62M security-robot order for South African mines
Five ROAMEO patrol robots at $9,000/unit/month on a 36-month term for a global mining company.
The Movers
real signal onlyRobots whose Robo Index score jumped on genuine signal this week — filtered to exclude moves caused by our own catalog filling in. Only Robolist can draw that line.

No mega-cap humanoid topped the real-movers board this week — the giants' week was made in the boardroom (M&A, fundraising), not in the index. Most trackers can't separate a genuine move from a data artifact. We can — that's the point of showing it.

attacking our #1J&J's OTTAVA wins FDA clearance — a direct shot at Intuitive
The FDA granted De Novo authorization for J&J MedTech's OTTAVA, whose arms are built into the operating table rather than mounted on carts. The same week, Japan's Medicaroid won a CE mark for its Hinotori robot, opening Europe.
Hyundai takes 100% of Boston Dynamics, buying out SoftBank
SoftBank exercised a 2021 put option; Hyundai paid ~$335M for the last ~10%, gaining full control of the Atlas program (headed for a Georgia plant in 2028).
Samsung stands up a dedicated robotics division
Samsung created the "Robotics eXperience (RX)" office under DX chief TM Roh and hired Lee Dong-geun — who ran Boston Dynamics strategy at Hyundai — to lead it, with humanoid hubs planned in the US, China and Japan.
