Overview
HYDRA is an autonomous robotic antifouling system (rAFS) developed by Swiss startup Nautica Technologies. It consists of autonomous antifouling robots that live onboard a vessel and groom the hull continuously before biofouling can establish, holding the hull at dry-dock smoothness — a state the company calls Laminar. Positioned as a peer and successor to conventional antifouling coatings, HYDRA prevents fouling from ever starting, claiming up to 20% fuel savings versus a fouled hull, zero downtime hours (works during normal operations, no dry dock required), and improved regulatory compliance with CII, FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS. The unit installs onboard without dry dock or retrofit downtime. HYDRA is patent pending and built by a team with roots at ETH Zürich and EPFL.
