Why Zoox trended in Q2 2026

Amazon's Zoox spent the quarter preparing for its commercial debut. The company unveiled a redesigned version of its purpose-built robotaxi — a vehicle with no steering wheel, engineered for production scale — and confirmed plans for its first paid public rides in the second half of 2026, with early testing running in Los Angeles.

The redesign matters because Zoox's bet differs from Waymo's: rather than retrofitting existing cars, it builds a bespoke vehicle, which raises the manufacturing stakes. Preparing that vehicle for large-scale production was the quarter's central theme.

What remains unproven is the launch itself. Zoox has shown hardware and set a timeline; the test that counts is moving from curated demonstrations to paying passengers at volume, which no amount of redesign guarantees.
